Transurethral prostatectomy

turp

Transurethral prostatectomy (TURP) is a surgery where a tool is inserted into the urethra through the prostate gland to significantly improve urination and eliminate voiding symptoms such as urinary frequency, nocturia and urgency.

This is a routine urological surgery with excellent results. The patient comes to the clinic the morning of surgery having fasted. The surgery is performed under general or regional (spinal or epidural) anesthesia and lasts 1-2 hours depending on the size of the prostate. The stay in hospital is 2-3 days with the catheter removed according to the initial size of the prostate and the postoperative results. The improvement of urination is immediate and continues to improve for months after surgery.

The transurethral prostatectomy is a permanent solution with no need for additional drugs to help with urination. It is an excellent choice for patients with a prostate size up to 80 ml.

Urologist surgeon Stelios Voulgaris offers this surgery at Euromedica Blue Cross Hospital using the sophisticated bipolar diathermy Olympus which has important advantages: it significantly reduces bleeding during surgery and caters for very large prostates, without significant bleeding and without complications. Bipolar diathermy is internationally recognised as the best combination of simple transurethral and Laser, optimally combining the advantages of these two methods.
