In September 2009 the first Prostate Brachytherapy Centre in Northern Greece began operations. Head of the Centre is urologist surgeon Stelios Voulgaris, who trained for three years in Great Britain in this minimally invasive method. Brachytherapy is a treatment option for localized prostate cancer (cancer in the early stages) and consists of specific placement of radioactive seeds inside the prostate to kill cancer cells by radiation. The method obtains results comparable to radical prostatectomy, without the side effects or complications of such a large operation (for example, erectile dysfunction).
The patient remains in hospital for just one night and leaves catheter-free. The surgery involves no incision, so there's no need for blood transfusion. Urinary incontinence after Brachytherapy is virtually nonexistent, while the patient has a good chance to maintain his erection post-op.
At the inauguration of the Centre in 2009, the first four Brachytherapy patients were operated on by Stelios Voulgaris and his team under the supervision of two distinguished scholars well-known in the field of Brachytherapy - urologist consultant Professor Stephen Langley and Radiation Director Robert Laing, who flew out especially to welcome Brachytherapy to Northern Greece. Both doctors trained Mr Voulgaris in Brachytherapy in the UK. The patients were discharged the next day after the catheter was removed and all were very happy with the procedure - one said, "I feel perfectly healthy, not as if I was operated on only 24 hours ago…"
There was a positive response to Brachytherapy amongst the scientific community at the following event at the Museum of Contemporary Art organized by the Euromedica Blue Cross. The international speakers and Mr Voulgaris had the opportunity to develop the theme of Brachytherapy in front of a large audience and were pleased by the interest shown among the local urologists.
The Prostate Brachytherapy Centre accepts patients for evaluation and discussion daily via rendezvous. You can book an appointment either through the call centre at Blue Cross Euromedica (phone 2310 966 100) or directly with the secretary of Stelios Voulgaris (phone 2310 260 950) at his private practice.
