Urinary Incontinence: the many different types and the various ways to face them

Urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence is more common than most people think. It is estimated that up and 10-35% of adults have some degree and some form of incontinence, and in nursing homes and hospitals this percentage jumps up to 60%! Also, social stigma prevents an incredible 50-70% of women from seeking specialist help. Apart from the burden of silent suffering and the obvious health problems this then causes, these patients will eventually suffer recurrent urinary tract infections and dermatitis in the genital area.

The use of a catheter is not a solution, as this worsens the problem of urinary tract infections and poses other risks such as stone formation and ascending infection of the kidneys (pyelonephritis).

There are solutions for all types of incontinence, however, and these are discussed below. Depending on the type of incontinence the patient suffers from, your urologist (who, by the way, is the only type of doctor to receive specialist training for treating urinary incontinence) will guide you through all available forms of conservative or surgical treatment options.
